This is a traditional Japanese-style restaurant, with a history of over 130 years. Its specialty is fukusashi (blowfish sashimi), thin slices of blowfish served with specially made ponzu (soy sauce-based sauce containing citrus juice) and graded daikon spiced with red pepper. Although eating blowfish was prohibited, the prohibition was lifted after Ito Hirobumi, Japan's first prime minister, ate blowfish here in 1888. This restaurant was the first officially permitted blowfish restaurant in Japan. The restaurant was also used as a venue for signing the Treaty of Shimonoseki to end the First Sino-Japanese War. The commemorative hall at the restaurant site exhibits furnishings and other items used at that time, and a reproduction of the venue of the peace conference.
