This river flows from Chofu into the Sea of Suo. It is named Dangu River after the legend where, before going to fight, Empress Jingu erected an altar ("dan") here to perform a ritual, and flowed the tool ("gu") she used for the ritual into the river. Along the river is a Chugoku Nature Promenade course, dotted with restaurants and sweets parlors. Dignified buildings in a samurai-residence style stand around the river, creating the unique atmosphere of a castle town. Lightning bugs flying around the clear stream are loved by local people as a symbol of the early summer season
