This temple was erected by order of the first lord of the Chofu Domain, Mori Hidemoto, to console the soul of his mother, Ominokata. After Hidemoto died, the temple was renamed Shosan-ji Temple after the Buddhist name of Motokiyo, Hidemoto's father. In the precincts, the graves of the second lord Mori Mitsuhiro and the seventh lord Mori Moronari stand, as well as a thirteen-layered stone tower, designated as a cultural property by Shimonoseki City in 1975. This 3.28-meter-high granite tower has thirteen-layered eaves carved into gentle curves, which suggest this tower has the characteristics of stone towers made in the late Kamakura period.
