This Nagaya-mon Gate belonged to the Kan family, who served by descent as doctors and academic lecturers of the Chofu Domain. A Nagaya-mon Gate is one of the traditional Japanese styles of gate architecture. Designated as a tangible cultural property by Shimonoseki City in 1976, the Kan family Nagaya-mon Gate features a majestic appearance suitable for the high status of this family. The gate has completely remained as it was built, as seen in extensive stone walls beneath daub walls. The street facing the gate is called Furue-shoji, where you can enjoy an atmosphere that most clearly reproduces that of the castle town era.
