Street lined with samural residences, symbolizing Chofu as a castle town

Jokamachi-Chofu Area
In Chofu, well known as a castle town, this street has most clearly maintained what the town looked like at that time. A stroll along the street will make you feel as if you have slipped into the Edo period. The street was designed to be prepared for battles, with earthen walls of samurai residences built for defensive purposes, and alleys containing many T-junctions intended to work as a maze. Among the buildings along the street, the most dignified one is the Kan family Nagaya-mon Gate, which suggests the majesty of the Kan family, who served the Chofu Domain through generations.
