Japanese National Railways operated the Kanmon Ferry services across the sea between Shimonoseki Station and Mojiko Station from 1901 to 1964. The ferry played an important role as a means of transport connecting Honshu and Kyushu for 63 years.
At that time, Mojiko Station had a passage to the ferry pier 100 meters away from the station.
Although the passage is blocked now, remains of part of the passage have been preserved and are open to visitors under the name of the Remains of the Passage to the Kanmon Ferry Pier, outside the ticket gate to the north of the platform. The remains, though on a small scale, show us what the passage looked like at that time.
