This tunnel, connecting Moji-ku in Kitakyushu City with Shimonoseki City in Yamaguchi Prefecture, is 3,461 meters long.

The submarine part of the tunnel, 780 meters long, has two stories, the upper of which is for automobiles, and the lower for pedestrians. It is known as a rare example of this kind of tunnel even from a global perspective.

The construction of the tunnel was started in 1937, and about 21 years, construction costs of 8 billion yen, and labor of 3.8 million people in total were devoted to constructing the tunnel. Since coming into use in 1958, the tunnel has been indispensable for tourism and business.
