This shrine originated when, at the Battle of Dannoura in 1185, local fishermen erected a shrine, feeling respect for Minamoto no Yoritomo and praying for his victory in the battle. The long stone stairway starting at a majestic torii gate leads to a place where a pictured monument to "Shichikyo-ochi" stands. "Shichikyo-ochi" denotes an incident where seven Court nobles who supported the doctorine of restoring the emperor to power and expelling the barbarians were banished from Kyoto due to a political disturbance within the Court in 1863. The area around the precincts are illuminated at night, and filled with an illusory atmosphere.
