Constructed in 1906, this building is the oldest existing consulate building in Japan and designated as an important cultural property by the national government. Because Shimonoseki flourished as the economic, diplomatic and transport center in Western Japan in the late Meiji era, a British consulate was established here. The building was repaired for preservation purposes and reopened in 2014, and now the first floor is open to the public as an exhibition room that introduces the history of the consulate and Shimonoseki, while the second floor is occupied by the cafe and pub Eikokukan, which is filled with British taste and reproduces the atmosphere of the building at that time.
